Η Αγκαθοκαλημάνα ανήκει στην τάξη των Charadriiformes (Χαραδριόμορφων) στην οικογένεια των Charadriidae (Χαραδριών), στο γένος Vanellus και η επιστημονική της ονομασία στη λατινική γλώσσα είναι Vanellus spinosus. Spinosus σημαίνει αγκαθωτός και προσδιορίζει το χαρακτηριστικό της γνώρισμα που είναι το αγκάθι που έχει στην καμπή της κάθε φτερούγας της, το οποίο της δίνει πλεονέκτημα έναντι και μεγαλύτερων σε μέγεθος πτηνών.
